Google Dumps Auto Photo Sync for Desktop Users

Google has ended automatic photo backups from desktop folders to Google Photos, affecting users who relied on this feature to keep their photos synced in the cloud. The change occurred on August 10, 2026, and will impact photographers and creators who import images from cameras, scanners, or other desktop sources.

Previously, users could choose a folder on their computer and have Google Drive automatically upload photos and videos into Google Photos. However, this background syncing has now stopped, and users must set up backups directly through the Google Photos website to continue backing up their desktop photos.

To do this, users can select folders using the 'Back up folders' option or import existing photos in Google Drive into Google Photos. It is recommended that users remove the old Drive-based backup setting first to avoid duplicate uploads.
