Google Earth Helps Urban Planner Optimize Infrastructure Planning with Real-World Data
Alejandra Macarena Tomietto, an urban planner and infrastructure strategist based in Washington DC, used Google Earth to plan the next generation of infrastructure for Buenos Aires' metropolitan area.
The official zoning maps provided were outdated and lacked context, making it difficult for Alejandra to make informed decisions. By combining rich imagery with professional-grade data on Google Earth, she was able to analyze 2,567 km² of metropolitan territory and predict how it would evolve.
Alejandra used historical imagery and GIS information to identify areas for investment and make better planning decisions. She found that nearly 400,000 residents were living in high environmental risk zones, which led her to recommend relocation protocols.
The use of Google Earth saved Alejandra's team time and improved decision-making. They could now pinpoint areas of growth and development, reducing inefficiencies and optimizing the use of public resources.
