Google Employee Quits Over AI Progress Concerns: 'Inherently Irresponsible'
Robert O'Callahan, a former Google DeepMind employee based in New Zealand, has resigned from the company due to concerns about the rapid progress of artificial intelligence. In his resignation letter, he stated that making AI much cheaper and lower-latency would not be beneficial for people right now.
O'Callahan expressed his worries about AI's speed and its potential consequences, saying, 'I don't think that's good for people right now: I firmly believe AI progress is currently far too rapid (and I have doubts about the destination too)'. He also shared a blog post where he discussed the need to minimize the risk of AI's dangers, stating that aiming for artificial superintelligence in the near future is 'inherently irresponsible'.
O'Callahan plans to continue working on AI-related projects in other ways, including studying how agents can be used to debug code. His departure from Google comes as a growing number of employees and researchers are raising concerns about the potential risks of advanced AI.
