Google Expands Search Profiles to India and Canada
Google is expanding its Search profiles feature to creators and publishers in India and Canada, with Brazil set to follow soon. Previously, this feature was only available in the U.S., where it launched in June. Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, announced the expansion on X, stating that creators and publishers in the new regions can now set up their own dedicated home base on Google.
The Search profiles gather a creator's or publisher's content from various platforms on a single page. Followers of these profiles may see more of the content in Google Discover. The setup process involves visiting profile.google.com/claim, signing in with a Google Account, and linking at least one platform account that meets the follower minimum requirements.
Google's help page for creating a profile still listed only the U.S. as of midday October 6, despite Stein's announcement. The page required at least one platform, such as YouTube, Instagram, X, or TikTok, to have 10,000 followers, and the person creating the profile had to be at least 18 years old. It remains unclear whether this follower requirement applies in India and Canada.
The expansion provides an opportunity for Canadian and Indian publications to set up a Search profile, similar to what U.S. sources have had since June. While creating a profile doesn't directly impact a source's ranking in Google Search, followers of the profile may see more of that source's content in Discover.
