Google Faces UK Regulation Push for More Search Provider Choice
Alphabet's Google is facing another regulatory hurdle in the UK, where competition authorities are proposing to give Android and Chrome users more choice over search providers. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) wants users to have a choice of search providers when they initially set up an Android phone or open Chrome. This would include AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
The CMA's proposal would allow AI-powered search engines that meet technical and security standards to appear alongside traditional search services. Additionally, the regulators want search engines to give clearer attribution for publishers so users can see where results come from and access the original material.
This move comes as competition between AI helpers and traditional search for internet searches increases. The CMA has previously forced Google to commit to being more transparent about how its search rankings function. Alphabet's Google dominates the Android and Chrome ecosystems, but this new regulation might give competitors easier routes to users.
