Google Gemini Linked to $69K Crypto Scam Involving Fake TRON Service
Google Gemini has been linked to a crypto scam where victims lost $69,651 in September. According to JP, founder of IOC Investigations, Tronify.rent deceived about 80 users after at least one victim reported that Gemini described the website as safe. Independent threat researchers had flagged Tronify.rent earlier for phishing and brand impersonation risks, with PhishDestroy recording abuse reports as early as April.
The scam site, Tronify.rent, posed as a TRON energy rental service, promising lower transaction costs. Victims reported funds being drained after connecting their wallets, with one Reddit user claiming a loss of 2,590 USDT. JP's investigation listed 12 TRON addresses associated with the operation but did not provide a detailed breakdown of the losses.
Google has not confirmed the interaction between Gemini and the victim but warns users that AI can make mistakes and advises verifying responses independently. The company also highlights risks of malicious webpages influencing AI systems through prompt-injection techniques. The Tronify.rent scam is part of a growing trend where AI is used to legitimize fraudulent activities in the crypto space.
