Google Gemini Model Access Cuts Hit Free and Lower-Paying Users
Google has announced changes to its Gemini app model distribution, affecting free and lower-paying users. Starting October 9, users without a Google AI subscription will be restricted to using Gemini Flash-Lite, losing access to other models like Flash and Pro.
On the other hand, AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will not face any reduction in model access and will gain access to Deep Think, a feature previously available only on higher monthly plans of $99.99 and $199.99.
Deep Think is designed for tasks requiring extensive reasoning, producing more thorough responses by working through multiple possibilities before providing an answer.
The changes follow Google's introduction of compute-based usage limits earlier this year, which refresh every five hours and include a weekly cap. Paid users receive higher allowances, but features like Pro consume more of the available limit.
