Google Invests $1.1 Million in Fort Wayne Water Infrastructure
Google has invested $1.1 million in Fort Wayne's water infrastructure through its new Indiana Water Impact Fund, which aims to upgrade City Utilities' water treatment plant and reduce overall water consumption. The grant is part of a larger effort by the tech giant to replenish more freshwater than it consumes by 2030.
The fund was established after Google opened a data center in Fort Wayne's far east side in December, which generated significant heat while operating. To mitigate this issue, Google has opted for water-based cooling technologies, which can reduce data center energy consumption by as much as 20%.
Critics have raised concerns about the environmental impact of large data centers like Google's, but officials from City Utilities, Indiana Michigan Power, and state government say they are committed to supporting community water infrastructure and protecting natural watersheds. This investment is seen as a step in that direction.
