Google Lands Record 396 MW Geothermal Deal in Utah
Google has signed a record-breaking power purchase agreement with Fervo Energy to buy 396 MW of geothermal electricity from its Cape Station project in Utah. The deal, which includes an option for Google to increase the capacity to nearly 1 GW by 2030, marks the largest enhanced geothermal power purchase agreement announced to date.
Fervo has invested over $2 billion in Cape Station, which uses advanced drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques to create engineered underground geothermal reservoirs. The project is expected to come online in 2028 and will provide round-the-clock carbon-free electricity to Google's potential data center development in Utah.
The agreement highlights the growing demand for reliable and low-carbon energy sources from technology companies like Google, which require firm power supplies for their increasing computing needs. Fervo CEO Tim Latimer noted that enhanced geothermal systems are ready to power the next generation of computing infrastructure.
