Google Launches First AI Satellite, Tackling Earth's Energy Limits
Alphabet's stock (GOOGL) saw a minor uptick of 0.5% in early trading after Google announced plans to launch an experimental AI satellite into orbit around Earth on Thursday.
The spacecraft, part of the Project Suncatcher research effort, carries custom computer chips designed to answer basic AI prompts directly from space.
Currently, AI software relies on massive data centers built on the ground, which consume vast amounts of electricity and water. Google aims to explore whether satellites can handle real-time AI tasks by placing test servers in orbit.
The company is seeking to exploit the continuous solar energy available in space using satellite-mounted solar panels, removing concerns about nighttime or cloudy days.
If successful, Google hopes to establish larger networks of connected satellites that can pass data back and forth using light beams, creating an entire network of orbital data centers powered by the sun.
