Google Launches First In-Orbit Test of Space-Based AI Computing Technology

Google has announced plans to launch its first in-orbit test of space-based AI computing technology as part of Project Suncatcher, a research program. The company will send a prototype satellite into low Earth orbit next week aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare launch, partnered with satellite company Planet Labs.

The mission aims to assess the performance of Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in space, specifically their ability to withstand radiation and extreme temperatures. TPUs have already been tested on AI workloads at a facility at the University of California, Davis, but an orbital mission is necessary to understand how they perform in real-world conditions.

Google will also test its approach to cooling power-intensive AI chips in space, as conventional airflow-based cooling cannot operate in a vacuum. The company plans to use heat pipes and radiators to transfer heat away from the processors.
