Google Launches Guided Vision Assistive Technology for Visually Impaired Android Users
Google has launched Guided Vision in Gemini Live, an assistive technology that helps users who are blind or have low vision navigate their surroundings using their Android phone's camera.
The feature, which was previewed last month, describes what the camera is pointed at and provides verbal prompts to help users reframe their view. It can be used for tasks such as reading small text, finding objects in a room, and describing colors and patterns.
Google emphasizes that Guided Vision is not a medical device or mobility aid, and should not be relied upon for navigation or obstacle detection. Instead, it's intended to assist users with everyday tasks and provide intuitive visual assistance.
The technology was built in partnership with Aira, a visual interpreting service, using tens of thousands of hours of training data from over 1,000 testers. Guided Vision is available on Android devices running Android 9 and above, in regions where Gemini Live is supported.
