Google Lens' Shift to AI Drives Users Away
Google's Lens feature has undergone significant changes in recent years, shifting its focus from being a user-friendly tool to an AI-driven ecosystem. The introduction of Gemini, Google's AI assistant, has transformed the way users interact with Lens.
The original functionality of Lens allowed users to simply point their camera at an object and search for relevant results. This approach was effective because it didn't require users to articulate their search query. However, the new AI-driven system interprets the image and decides on the context of the search, often leading to cluttered and complicated results.
This change has also led to a loss of trustworthiness in the responses provided by Lens. The removal of Homework mode, which allowed users to generate answers based on trusted sources, has been replaced with AI-generated overviews that may not always be accurate. Furthermore, these overviews often lack links to credible sources, leaving users to rely on the machine's interpretation.
Additionally, the integration of AI in Lens has also led to issues with searching for similar images. Users have reported being pushed into conversational mode when adjusting the search box, defeating the purpose of using Lens in the first place.
