Google Limits Free Access to Gemini AI Models, Restricts More Powerful Options
Google is revamping its Gemini AI models, limiting access for free users starting in October 2026. Users without a subscription will only have access to the smallest model, Flash-Lite. The more powerful models, Flash and Pro, will be restricted to those with an active subscription.
The change affects personal account users who currently enjoy access to the 3.6 Flash model for free or varying levels of access to the 3.1 Pro model. AI Plus subscribers ($4.99/month) will lose access to Pro and can only use Flash-Lite and Flash, whereas all three models require an active subscription with Google's AI Pro ($19.99/month) or AI Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99/month).
While the impact is likely small for casual users who are not aware of which model they're running, power users may be affected. They comprise just a few percent of the total base and may already be paying for subscriptions.
