Google Maps AI Upgrade Brings Conversational Navigation and 3D Views
Google Maps is introducing its most significant upgrade in over a decade, powered by the company’s latest Gemini AI models. The new Ask Maps feature enables users to ask detailed, natural-language questions about locations and travel plans directly within the app. This feature is now rolling out on Android and iOS devices in the United States and India, offering a more conversational and immersive experience.
The Ask Maps tool allows users to seek complex recommendations, such as finding family-friendly hikes with lunch stops, locating charging spots, or identifying night-lit tennis courts. It leverages data from over 300 million places worldwide and insights from more than 500 million contributors to provide personalized suggestions. Users can also plan multi-stop road trips with recommendations sourced from community insights.
In addition to Ask Maps, Google has launched Immersive Navigation, a major update to the app’s driving and route guidance. This feature generates realistic 3D views of roads and surroundings, combining Street View imagery with aerial photos and AI processing. It aims to make navigation feel more like real-world driving, reducing confusion at complex intersections. The update also includes broader route previews, updated voice guidance, and clearer explanations of alternate route options.
Immersive Navigation is beginning its rollout in the United States, with plans to expand to walking and cycling navigation across Android and iOS devices, as well as vehicle platforms like CarPlay and Android Auto. Google aims to transform digital maps into intuitive, conversational tools that make everyday planning less stressful for users in India and the United States, where the update is already available.
