Google Maps Gets Conversational Update with Gemini AI
Google Maps has undergone its biggest update in over a decade, making navigation even more intuitive and conversational. The new version, powered by Gemini AI, allows users to ask natural questions like 'where's the best coffee near my hotel?' or 'who has the highest-rated spicy tuna roll on my route?'
The updated navigation visuals now clearly map out complex overpasses, tricky intersections, and instant detour routes if traffic spikes ahead. The new feature is called Ask Maps and it uses Gemini AI to provide real-time information and answers to users' questions.
According to Charles Armstrong, a Google Maps architect for over ten years, the team studied common driver pain points and worked backward to 'build a more confident navigation experience.' The end goal was to give drivers complete peace of mind behind the wheel, eliminating the urge to glance down at a phone when navigating complicated routes.
The new features are already live in the U.S. and India, and users can access them by asking natural questions through the Ask Maps function. For example, users can ask for details like 'does this spot have easy street parking?' or 'is there outdoor seating with shade?'
