Google Maps Reflects Trump-Ordered Name Change to Lake America

Google Maps has started displaying Lake America instead of Lake Ontario for users in the United States, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on August 27. The move comes after a similar change was made to the Gulf of Mexico, which is now referred to as the Gulf of America.

The name change is part of a broader effort by Trump to 'restore names that honor American greatness.'

According to Google, the update will only affect users in the US, while those in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario on their maps. Users outside of North America may see both names.

The decision has been met with criticism from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who pointed out that the name 'Lake Ontario' has been used for over 400 years and predates both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States. Carney stated on social media platform X that 'for Canadians, it will always be Lake Ontario.'

The change is expected to roll out gradually as Google updates its maps.
