Google Maps Reflects Trump's Order Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America

Google has updated its maps application to reflect President Donald Trump's recent order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for US users. The change is part of a broader effort by the technology giant to use names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

This decision follows a similar move in 2025 when Trump issued an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, which was also reflected on Google Maps.

According to Google, users in the US will now see 'Lake America', while those in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario'. Users outside of the US and Canada will see both names. This policy is based on a long-standing practice for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country.

The move has been met with skepticism, including a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shore reading 'Lake Ontario. Now and forever.'
