Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario 'Lake America' for US Users

Google Maps has made changes to its mapping platform in response to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in August 2026. The order mandated that US federal agencies adopt a new title for Lake Ontario, renaming it 'Lake America'.

The tech giant updated its platform to reflect this change, but only for users within the United States. Users accessing Google Maps from Canada still see the lake's original name, while those outside both countries are shown a combined label.

The change was made in line with the US government's Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) database and is intended to reflect the lake's importance to the domestic economy and maritime transportation within the Great Lakes region. However, it does not have any legal standing internationally or in Canada, where the lake remains officially known as Lake Ontario.

This move mirrors a similar action taken by the Trump administration in 2025 when they designated the Gulf of Mexico as 'Gulf of America' for federal usage, prompting Google Maps to introduce regional display rules for that waterway as well.
