Google Maps Warns Drivers of Low Emissions Zones with Circled 'Z' Icon

Google Maps has started displaying a circled 'Z' icon on routes that pass through Low Emissions Zones (LEZ) or Ultra-Low Emissions Zones (ULEZ), which are designed to reduce air pollution in urban areas. These zones can be found in many European cities, including London, Paris, and Berlin.

In London, the ULEZ requires drivers of cars that don't meet the latest emissions standards to pay a daily toll of £12.50 (around $16.80) if they want to drive within the city. Cars traveling in and out of the zone are monitored by cameras that automatically read license plates.

If you see the circled 'Z' icon on Google Maps, it's worth tapping on the route details for more information about the emissions zone. The app will often display information about the restrictions for that particular zone, but this might be limited in some cities.
