Alphabet, Google's parent company, is on the verge of finalizing a nuclear power deal worth at least $1 billion with Constellation Energy. The agreement, expected to be announced soon, comes as AI-driven companies scramble to secure reliable energy for expanding data centers. Constellation Energy, the largest US nuclear reactor operator, declined to comment on the reported deal, but it claims its fleet generates about 10% of US clean energy.

Google's electricity demand surged 37% in 2025, underscoring the urgency of securing stable power sources. The company's nuclear strategy extends beyond this potential deal with Constellation. Google has been involved in restarting shut-down reactors, funding advanced-reactor development, and supporting new nuclear sites. For instance, in October 2025, Google signed a 25-year agreement with NextEra Energy to restart Iowa's Duane Arnold Energy Center, and it plans to develop three potential advanced-nuclear sites targeting at least 600 MW each.

Google is not alone in its pursuit of nuclear power. Competitors like Amazon and Microsoft have also secured deals with Constellation. Amazon announced a 20-year agreement involving 690 MW of power and over $3 billion in investment at Maryland's Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant. Microsoft partnered with Constellation to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear facility. These moves highlight the growing demand for existing nuclear power plants as new projects face lengthy permitting and construction timelines.

As AI companies race to meet their energy needs, nuclear power remains a critical resource. Google's broader strategy includes exploring data centers in space to address power and cooling challenges. The tech giant's commitment to nuclear energy reflects the industry's push for sustainable and reliable solutions to support AI growth.
