Google Photos Rolls Out Redact Markup Tool for Sensitive Image Editing

Google Photos has introduced a new Markup tool that allows users to blur or pixelate sensitive details in images. This feature, known as redact, is now available on all Android devices and provides an easy way to hide personal data from screenshots and photos before sharing them with others.

The redact Markup tool works similarly to OnePlus' Redact feature, which has been available for several years. It allows users to choose from three different styles: blur, mosaic light, and mosaic. The blur style applies a Gaussian blur to the selected area, while the mosaic and mosaic light styles add small and coarser pixel blocks, respectively.

The tool also features a thickness slider that enables users to adjust the brush size according to the image being edited. This is particularly useful when redacting faces or text, as it allows for finer control over the redaction process.

According to Akshay Bhalla, who first used this feature on his OnePlus 9 Pro five years ago, the redact tool is a game-changer for everyday users. He notes that it's essential for hiding sensitive information from screenshots and photos before sharing them with others, especially in situations where personal data may be compromised.

The rollout of the redact Markup tool is currently ongoing, and users can check if they have access to the feature by ensuring their Google Photos app is up-to-date. Once available, users can follow a simple process to activate the redact tool: open Google Photos, select the photo or screenshot to be edited, tap the Edit toggle, choose the Markup option, and select the Redact pen icon.
