Google Prepares to Launch First AI Satellite as Part of Project Suncatcher
Google is gearing up to launch its first Project Suncatcher AI satellite next week, a crucial step towards creating orbital data centers for AI workloads. The satellite, called MVP, will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and will test the performance of Google's custom TPU accelerators in space.
The project aims to design a constellation of AI satellites that can tap into solar energy, reducing costs associated with ground-based facilities. According to Travis Beals, senior director of Google's Paradigms of Intelligence research team, 'This first launch is about seeing what works, identifying points of failure and applying those findings to future missions.'
The MVP satellite will contain four TPUs and a solar panel system capable of generating 1 kilowatt of power. However, it won't be able to keep up with the chip's heat generation, forcing engineers to shut down the workloads after short bursts.
