Google replaces Gemini Gems with more flexible Skills system

Google has replaced its Gemini Gems feature with a new system called Skills, marking a shift in how users interact with AI-driven tools. Gems, introduced in mid-2024, were standalone AI helpers designed for specific tasks like cooking, coding, or language learning. However, they operated in silos, making them cumbersome to use. Skills, on the other hand, integrate seamlessly into any chat, allowing users to invoke them dynamically based on the current conversation.

The new Skills system enables users to stack multiple skills together, creating a step-by-step automation workflow. For example, a user could research a topic, format the findings into a digest, and then share it via Gmail, all within the same chat. This flexibility makes Skills more adaptable to various workflows, whether for writing, research, or project management.

Creating a Skill is straightforward. Users can either ask Gemini to generate one by describing their needs or manually configure it through the Settings menu. The system allows for detailed instructions, ensuring the AI can perform tasks with precision. For instance, a user might create a 'draft-proofreader' Skill to catch silly mistakes in their writing before submitting it.

Google suggests several Skills to try, such as a meeting-prep Skill that surfaces relevant emails and documents before a meeting, or a 'de-jargon' Skill that simplifies complex text. The ability to stack Skills, like combining fact-checking with AI writing detection, further enhances their utility. This transition from Gems to Skills reflects Google's effort to make AI interactions more intuitive and efficient.
