Google Reveals Best Times to Book Flights for Cheaper Fares
Google has shared insights from its analysis of five years of flight data, offering guidance on when to book flights for the best prices. For domestic flights, the cheapest fares typically appear around 39 days before departure, while international flights tend to be lowest about 89 days out. However, international prices often remain low between 50 and 133 days before departure, providing a flexible window for booking.
The data also highlights that the traditional advice to book flights on Tuesday is largely a myth. Wednesday is actually slightly cheaper, but the savings are minimal, just 1.4% compared to Sunday, the most expensive day. Instead, Google emphasizes that the days you choose to travel matter more. Departing on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday can save around 14% compared to weekend travel, with domestic flights offering up to 20% savings if you avoid Sunday departures and returns.
Additionally, Google found that nonstop flights cost about 20% more than connecting flights, suggesting that travelers willing to take a layover could save money. The company notes that while these patterns provide useful guidance, airfares fluctuate constantly, so flexibility and timing remain key to securing the best deals.
