Google Review Glitch Highlights Fragility of Platform-Built Trust
A widespread issue affected Google Business Reviews in late June and early July, causing thousands of legitimate reviews to vanish from business profiles.
Some businesses reported losing dozens, hundreds, or even over a thousand reviews, with one company losing all 289 of its reviews and having review posting restricted. Another reported losing approximately 1,390 genuine reviews.
Google began restoring affected reviews, but some businesses continued to report partial losses weeks later. The issue highlighted the fragility of platform-built trust, where automated systems can fail to distinguish between legitimate and suspicious content.
David Malmborg, VP of Sales and Strategy at Boostability, pointed out that 'algorithms fail' when relying on automated systems to evaluate millions of pieces of content daily. He emphasized that businesses should not solely depend on these systems for their digital reputation.
