Google Rolls Out New Sideloading Flow for Android Devices
Google has started rolling out its new sideloading flow for Android devices, which is designed to combat malicious apps from unverified developers.
The advanced flow includes a restart and a 24-hour wait before users can install an app from an unregistered developer. The process also requires authentication using the device's screen lock and confirmation that no one is pressuring the user to change the setting.
This new system is intended to disrupt scams where victims are coached through installing malicious apps, according to Google. However, not everyone is pleased with the extra friction. Some users have expressed concern that the process is too cumbersome and may lead to legitimate developers being blocked from updating their apps.
The rollout comes ahead of developer verification enforcement on September 30 in four countries: Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. This will initially cover apps distributed through Google Play and other app stores before expanding more broadly to all regions and app installations by 2027.
