Google Rolls Out 'Tell Maps' Feature Allowing Users to Contribute Information with Conversational AI
Google has started rolling out its new feature, Tell Maps, which allows users to contribute information about places using conversational AI. This feature is a result of Google's effort to make it simpler for contributors to share updates and help keep maps fresh and helpful.
The feature uses insights from over 500 million contributors to improve the accuracy of map data. Users can suggest edits conversationally, right from Ask Maps and the Contribute tab, and even upload photos of storefront signs for Maps to detect new hours.
Claudia Tomina, a LinkedIn user, tested Tell Maps and found that it is 'genuinely agentic,' meaning the AI takes action on behalf of the user. However, she also encountered some limitations, such as not being able to locate a service area business and having to leave reviews manually.
Experts are cautioning businesses to be aware of the potential for sabotage, with Darren Shaw suggesting that users can use Tell Maps to report negative experiences about competitors.
