Google Search Transformed into Default Agent Platform
Google has announced a major shift in its search engine functionality by introducing information agents, agentic booking, and agentic coding directly into Search. At I/O 2026, Elizabeth Reid, VP of Search, called this change 'the era of Search agents', marking a pivot from retrieval-based engines to active, agentic platforms.
The new features are built on three pillars: information agents, which continuously scan data feeds and deliver synthesized updates; expanded agentic booking, which aggregates real-time pricing and availability for local experiences and services; and agentic coding, which brings custom generative UI directly into Search. Gemini 3.5 Flash is the underlying model powering these changes, claimed to be four times faster than other frontier models while delivering capabilities at less than half the price.
Google's infrastructure investment has made this scale legible, with a capex of approximately $180 to $190 billion in 2026, up from $31 billion in 2022. The company also announced that AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, and Search queries have hit an all-time high.
The introduction of information agents as the default search experience for over a billion users marks a significant shift in the distribution of autonomous agents. Industry analysts have framed this change as structural rather than incremental, with visibility moving from blue-link rankings to AI-composed surfaces. The economics of the web are being rewritten in real time, and businesses that have optimized for traditional search engine visibility now face a platform that mediates rather than directs traffic.
