Google Sends First AI Chip into Space as Part of Suncatcher Moonshot

Google is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence (AI) computing by launching its first AI chip into space next week as part of Project Suncatcher. The mission, a collaboration with satellite imaging company Planet Labs, aims to test whether Google's Tensor Processing Units can operate reliably outside Earth's atmosphere.

The prototype satellite will measure how the chips withstand the forces of launch, radiation exposure, and extreme temperature swings in orbit. To address the issue of heat dissipation in space, Google is testing a new design that combines heat pipes with radiators, an approach it says has worked in ground-based vacuum chamber testing.

Google first announced Project Suncatcher in November 2025 as a long-term research effort to overcome one of AI's most persistent bottlenecks: the enormous power demands of training and running large models. The company frames this as a moonshot, acknowledging that it will require solving complex engineering challenges.
