Togo Joins Visa-Free Movement in Africa, Easing Travel Restrictions for Africans

Africa's visa-free travel movement is gaining momentum, with some countries removing visa requirements for African nationals. According to the 2025 Africa Visa Openness Index, the share of intra-African travel scenarios that require a visa ahead of travel rose from 47.1% in 2024 to 51.1% in 2025.

However, some countries are moving in the opposite direction. Togo, for example, removed its visa requirement for African citizens on May 18, 2026, becoming one of the few countries to waive visas for nationals of every African state.

The new policy allows African travelers with a valid national passport to stay up to 30 days without a visa. Before departure, they must register on the government platform 'voyage.gouv.tg' at least 24 hours before arrival and obtain a slip to present at border posts.
