Google Shifts AI Safety Unit to Global Affairs in Major Reorganization
Google is reorganizing its artificial intelligence (AI) units by transferring its AI responsibility team from Google DeepMind to the global affairs organization, according to a report. The move affects 90 people who work on various aspects of AI safety and responsibility, including chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks.
The reorganization follows a restructuring announced in August, which saw Demis Hassabis move into a chairman role after co-founding Google DeepMind in 2014. Some employees are concerned that the change in reporting structure will negatively impact their work, limit independent research, and reduce insight into the latest models.
Google spokespersons stated that the move aims to strengthen AI safety by bringing teams closer together. The reorganization is part of a broader effort to shift Google DeepMind from a semi-autonomous unit to a more integrated division within Google.
