Google Spares Its Ad Empire from Breakup
Alphabet's Google escaped a major antitrust threat on Wednesday after a US judge rejected the Justice Department's push to force the tech giant to sell its AdX advertising exchange.
The ruling removes one of the most severe structural risks hanging over Google's advertising empire, although new interoperability requirements could still weaken advantages created by controlling multiple layers of the digital ad market.
US District Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled in April 2025 that Google illegally monopolized markets for publisher ad servers and ad exchanges. The Justice Department subsequently sought a divestiture of AdX along with behavioral restrictions designed to prevent Google from favoring its own products.
Brinkema declined to order the breakup, instead requiring Google's advertising technology to become more interoperable with rival systems. Some details of the remedies remain sealed and are expected to emerge publicly in redacted form.
