Google Takes AI Compute into Orbit with Experimental Satellite Launch
Google is taking its artificial intelligence infrastructure into outer space by launching an experimental satellite carrying custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) into orbit. This marks Big Tech's first move towards establishing orbital AI data centers, with Alphabet Inc.'s ($GOOGL) stock trading steadily following the announcement.
The project, called Suncatcher, aims to deploy prototype satellites equipped with Google TPUs to evaluate hardware performance in space conditions. The primary objectives include assessing radiation hardening, thermal management, and harnessing continuous sunlight for power generation.
Google is partnering with satellite imaging operator Planet Labs to validate inter-satellite optical laser communications, a crucial step for distributed orbital computing. While the project's initial focus is on research and development, success could offer a structural escape from terrestrial energy constraints.
