Google Taps Space for Scalable Machine Learning Infrastructure
Google is preparing to test a satellite in space as part of its Project Suncatcher initiative, which aims to explore the possibility of hosting scalable machine learning infrastructure in orbit. The test will involve launching a small satellite called 'MWP', about the size of a refrigerator, on a SpaceX Transporter 18 rideshare flight on October 1.
The satellite is designed to test whether artificial intelligence (AI) chips can survive and operate in space, using solar power as its primary energy source. Google's research teams have been preparing for this test by ensuring that the AI chips, known as TPUs, can withstand the vibration of launching into space.
One reason Google is interested in developing data centers in space is to bypass the backlash against building new data centers on Earth due to concerns over energy and water use, pollution, and potential physical effects on local communities. However, experts caution that putting data centers in space will be costly and may not necessarily solve these issues.
