Google Teams Up with Aviation Industry to Tackle Contrail Pollution
Google is partnering with the U.K. government and aviation industry to reduce climate-warming contrails using AI insights in an initiative called Operation Blue Skies.
The program aims to identify regions of the atmosphere where contrails are most likely to form, based on data gathered from earlier trials, satellite imagery, and historical flight data.
Google's technical lead Paul Hodgson said that during two four-month operational periods, around 1% to 5% of flights in a specific region will be redirected to avoid contrail-prone areas, with the goal of demonstrating whether this can significantly reduce contrail formation.
The trial is expected to cost £5 million and will involve researchers from Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge to independently verify its climate impact.
