Google Teams Up with Georgia Power for Nuclear Plant Upgrade
Southern Company's unit, Georgia Power, has signed an agreement with Google to upgrade two of its nuclear plants. The deal aims to add about 96 megawatts of electricity capacity at the Vogtle and Hatch units.
The upgrades will involve modifications to equipment including turbines, pumps, motors, and cooling systems, allowing the reactors to produce more electricity from existing plant infrastructure. This is expected to have projected benefits of $900 million for customers over the life of the units.
The agreement needs approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission and would allow Google to support upgrades that meet large customers' clean-energy goals while shielding non-participating customers from costs tied to the upgrades.
