Google Teams Up with UK Government to Tackle Aviation's Contrail Problem
The UK government is teaming up with Google to reduce the environmental impact of aviation. A new trial will use Met Office weather forecasts and Google's AI to predict where persistent contrails, or vapor trails left behind by planes, are most likely to form over the North Atlantic.
By identifying these areas, participating aircraft can be rerouted or fly at a different altitude to avoid them. The £2.6 million project will run for 30 months and include flight tests in the winters of 2026-27 and 2027-28.
The formation of contrails is a significant contributor to climate change, and persistent contrails can trap heat and warm the planet. While changing an aircraft's route or altitude can burn additional fuel, potentially increasing its CO2 emissions, the trial will aim to determine whether this trade-off is worth it in terms of reduced contrail impact.
The UK government has already allocated £219 million for sustainable aviation fuel production and another £43 million for technologies including electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft. This project takes a more modest approach by focusing on small tweaks to flight paths rather than requiring significant changes to aircraft design or technology.
