Google Tests AI Chips in Space with Project Suncatcher
Google is embarking on an ambitious project to create data centres in space. Dubbed Project Suncatcher, the initiative aims to harness the abundant solar energy available in orbit for powering artificial intelligence (AI) computing equipment.
The first step involves launching a test satellite carrying AI chips into low Earth orbit to assess their performance under extreme conditions. The satellite will be exposed to intense radiation and extreme temperatures, which could potentially damage the equipment. Additionally, cooling is another challenge, as the satellite must release heat produced by its chips through specially designed equipment.
The test is crucial in determining whether Google's AI computing equipment can withstand the harsh environment of space. If successful, Project Suncatcher could pave the way for building larger systems of connected satellites that can handle demanding AI tasks using near-constant sunlight.
