Google Tests AI Chips in Space with Prototype Satellite Launch

Google has announced plans to launch a prototype satellite to test its AI chips in space. The company's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) will be loaded onto a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket next week to evaluate how they handle the physical stress of spaceflight and radiation extremes.

The goal is to eventually link together multiple constellations of satellites, allowing them to manage larger AI workloads while in orbit. Google notes that satellites in low Earth orbit can access near-constant sunlight, generating up to eight times more solar power than on Earth.

Cooling orbital data centers and ensuring high-bandwidth communication over short distances are considered engineering hurdles. Google emphasizes the importance of methodical engineering in proving hardware can handle the unpredictable realities of operating in space.
