Google Tests AI Hardware in Space with Satellite Launch

Google is set to launch its first satellite as part of Project Suncatcher, a research effort to explore space's potential for hosting large-scale AI computing infrastructure. The prototype satellite will be launched on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission next week and will test Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) in space.

The project aims to study how TPUs operate in space, where they can access near-constant sunlight generating up to eight times more solar power than on Earth. This could potentially enable the management of larger AI workloads while in orbit.

Google's senior director for Paradigms of Intelligence Travis Beals stated that 'can our AI hardware operate in space?' is a basic question that needs answering, and this initial mission will gather data on how TPUs handle physical stress, radiation, and thermal extremes in space.
