Google Tests Payment Pilot for Contributing Content
Google is testing a pilot program that pays participating sites when their content contributes to answers in the Gemini app, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. The program, which is still in its early stages, has approached at least dozens of publishers.
The payment system relies on existing Web search data instead of adding new information. Participating sites receive a Search Console panel with monthly earnings and some history, as well as the option to opt out from settings.
However, one publishing executive noted that accepting these payouts might weaken a site's bargaining position when negotiating better terms, as Google could point to the pilot as compensation it already provides.
