Google Tests Space-Based AI Computing with Project Suncatcher

Google is launching a satellite carrying four custom Tensor Processing Units to test whether AI chips can survive in space. The satellite, known as MVP, will be launched on SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission on October 1, 2026.

The project, called Project Suncatcher, aims to explore the possibility of using solar-powered satellites equipped with TPUs and free-space optical links to scale machine learning compute beyond what's practical on Earth. Google Research has described it as a 'moonshot' to find out whether space can host large-scale AI computing infrastructure.

The MVP satellite will carry approximately 1 kilowatt of solar power and is expected to remain in orbit for up to six years. The planned compute test duration is up to one year, during which the TPUs will be tested under three specific stresses: launch forces, radiation, and temperature extremes.
