Google Tests Space-Based Data Centers with AI-Powered Satellite Launch

Google has launched its first test satellite, nicknamed MVP, to explore the possibility of running data centers in space. The satellite, which contains four tensor processing units (TPUs), was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The mission is part of Project Suncatcher, a research effort announced by Google in November 2025. According to Google, the primary goal of the project is to determine if AI hardware can operate in space. The satellite will test the performance of the TPUs and evaluate their ability to run AI queries.

The pitch for orbital data centers comes down to power generation. In low Earth orbit, satellites receive near-constant sunlight and can generate up to eight times more solar power than panels on the ground. This is significant because AI's appetite for electricity continues to grow, and data centers on the ground face resistance from rural communities.
