Google Tests Unlocking Android Phones with Google Account

Google is testing a new feature that allows users to unlock their Android phones using their Google account, even if they forget their PIN or password. This option was spotted in the fifth beta of Android 17 QPR2 and is called 'Unlock with Google account.'

In the past, Android users who forgot their lock codes had limited options. Until Android 4.4, users could reset a pattern lock through their account, but this feature disappeared with Android 5.0 Lollipop. This left a factory reset as the only way to regain access to the phone.

Android 5.1 introduced Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which requires users to sign in to their Google account to prove ownership of the device. However, this check only occurs after the data is erased, resulting in lost data for the rightful owner if it wasn't synced to the cloud.
