Google to Support New HTTP QUERY Method, But Adoption Will Take Time
Google Search will eventually support the new HTTP QUERY method, according to Gary Illyes from Google. This is similar to POST requests but can be automatically repeated or restarted without concern for partial state changes. The QUERY method combines the safety and cacheability of GET with the ability to send a structured payload body like POST.
Gary explained that this method is particularly useful for pages with faceted navigation and heavy search filters, as it eliminates the need for complex query strings or ugly POST routes that can break edge/CDN caching and crawlability. However, widespread adoption will take time, as web servers, CDNs, reverse proxies, and browsers must update their networking stacks first.
Gary added that even HTML needs an update before QUERY can be supported, not to mention CORS. Google Search will eventually support the new method as the ecosystem catches up.
