Google TV Wins by Not Changing the Game
Google TV has been gaining popularity without making significant changes to its platform. In contrast, its competitors Amazon's Fire TV and Roku devices have introduced features that some users find annoying, such as mandatory pop-up ads on Fire TV devices after system updates.
The redesign of the interface for Fire TV allows for more ad placements in addition to better navigation, while Roku has been pushing more ads and testing auto-playing video ads before the home screen. These moves have made Google TV look tasteful by comparison, with its relatively fewer number of ads.
Google's interface is also considered better overall, thanks to its AI-powered search feature, which taps into a vast level of web knowledge in addition to device commands. Amazon and Roku have been trying to catch up with their own conversational AI features but are still behind.
