Google Unveils Conveyor Belt Keyboard with One-Handed Typing Capability
The Gboard development team in Japan has designed an unusual keyboard that moves its keys towards the user's hand, allowing for one-handed typing. The 'Gboard Kurukuru Version' is a conveyor belt-style keyboard with 116 keys arranged across four lines. Each line holds 29 keys, and users can type both uppercase and lowercase letters with just one hand.
The design is meant to address the limitations of traditional keyboards, which often require significant arm and palm movement for one-handed or single-finger typing. The team has released the design blueprints as open source on GitHub, allowing anyone to build their own version of the keyboard. There are no plans for a commercial release.
The Gboard Kurukuru Version is part of an ongoing series of DIY keyboards from Google's development team, which releases new designs every year on October 1. Past entries include a bar version with keys arranged in a single horizontal line and a head-mounted wearable input device. The current design is meant to be a fun and lighthearted take on traditional keyboard design.
