Tewksbury's Monarch Ranch Offers Sanctuary for Pollinators
Behind the Tewksbury Public Library lies John Ryan's Monarch Ranch, a sanctuary for pollinators and monarch butterflies. The project began when Ryan, as a nine-year-old boy, watched his father care for a monarch caterpillar, explaining its transformation to him.
Ryan's fascination with monarchs led to the creation of Monarch Ranch, which aims to protect local milkweed habitats and provide breeding grounds for these iconic butterflies. The eastern population of monarchs has faced a long-term decline, making this effort crucial for their survival.
Volunteers, including students from Valley Collaborative, help build and maintain the habitat. One student expressed the impact of the experience, saying 'Butterflies make me smile.'
Ryan emphasizes that every contribution counts in restoring monarch populations: 'You plant one flower, you take care of one caterpillar, I'm all in and I'll help you too.'
