Google Unveils Gemini 4's 'Argon' AI Model Amid Rivalry with Anthropic and OpenAI
Google has announced its new top-tier artificial intelligence model, 'Argon', as part of its Gemini 4 generation. The model is larger in size than Google's previous Pro models and is designed for complex workloads.
In a press release, Google stated that Argon is comparable to frontier models like Astra from OpenAI and Opus from Anthropic on key coding and cyber benchmarks.
However, the company also admitted that Argon lags behind on certain other metrics, including two of the four coding-related benchmarks included in the release.
Google has abandoned its previous plan to release Gemini 3.5 Pro, which was initially set for June. The delay has allowed competitors Anthropic and OpenAI to push the research frontier with new releases to their top models.
